I'd like to be able to set default settings for a new post. I have forgotten to check to make the post public. It would be nice to have the ability to set a default on or off.

We require posts to have a minimum number of votes to remain open. If you still believe Primfeed should implement your feature, you're welcome to create it again and ask the community to vote for it.
